The trend is to now move Peer Educators into becoming “Wellness Stewards”, with the knowledge and skills to address HIV/AIDS, lifestyle diseases, stress, substance abuse and other related psycho-social ills.
Lifestyle diseases such as heart disease hypertension and diabetes are known as the “Silent Killers” and are seriously increasing as our Western lifestyle encourages unhealthy food choices and an increasing sedentary life style.
It is estimated that 80% of visits to a general practitioner and 60% of absenteeism is stress related. Whichever way we look, the health of our employees is becoming a major concern to management and there is an ever increasing need to seriously address and manage this threat to business.
Peer educators are therefore being trained to deliver general health care messages that impact on employee wellbeing. They are being educated to encourage health lifestyle choices and the become role models in this regard.
